The challenge
The offices of David Chipperfield Architects at 180 The Strand needed refurbishing. The building, designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd in 1971 to 1976, has been reworked as a creative hub with exhibition spaces, offices, restaurants, bars and a rooftop pool. The client wanted a polished concrete floor, but the construction of the building did not allow one.
The DCP solution
Maslens, the flooring contractor, recommended Cemflow Topping Pigmented, an industrial grade, coloured, self-smoothing floor topping for new and existing internal floors. It gives a look similar to polished concrete as a 10 mm layer over the existing substrate, with a flat, smooth, hygienic and hard wearing surface for heavy commercial traffic. It is quicker and cheaper than a polished concrete floor. Cemflow Topping carries the EMICODE EC1 very low emission label.
DCP products used
How it was applied
- Apply two coats of DCP Neoprene Primer to give adhesion and reduce the permeability of the floor.
- Apply Cemflow Topping Pigmented (colour Pebble) at 10 mm over the existing substrate.
- Seal with Cemflow Sealer, a clear matt polyurethane sealer for Cemflow screeds and concrete.
The result
The client got a floor with a look similar to polished concrete over more than 3,000 m² of offices, built as a 10 mm overlay on the existing substrate.
