The challenge

The owner of a private seaside chalet in Al Khiran City wanted to renovate the 200 m2 tiled area around the pool. The new floor had to be durable, low maintenance and UV resistant, with a natural appearance. It had to be applied on top of the existing ceramic tiles.

The DCP solution

DCP proposed the Strongcoat PU Screed system, a two part, high density polyurethane resin that binds decorative aggregates. The finish depends on the type, colour and size of aggregate and its ratio to resin, and is mixed on site. The system has three layers: Strongcoat Primer (an epoxy primer for adhesion), Strongcoat PU Screed resin mixed with the chosen aggregate, and Strongcoat PU Screed neat resin as a sealer. Laying it over the existing tiles avoided stripping them out. Its main benefit is low maintenance cost, as the whole system does not need replacing or reapplying because of frequent use.

Flooring Strongcoat Primer Solvent free epoxy resin based primer for flooring and coatings Product page: Strongcoat PrimerSpecifications: Strongcoat Primer
Flooring Strongcoat PU Screed Aliphatic polyurethane binder for creating stone carpet systems Product page: Strongcoat PU ScreedSpecifications: Strongcoat PU Screed

Concrete repair Quickmast 341 Solvent-free high strength epoxy paste Product page: Quickmast 341

How it was applied

  1. Clean and prepare the tile surface. Remove damaged tiles and fill the gaps with Flo-Grout 2 cementitious grout.
  2. Repair irregularities and cracks with Quickmast 341 epoxy paste.
  3. Prime the substrate with Strongcoat Primer.
  4. Mix Strongcoat PU Screed resin, then mix it with the chosen aggregate and place on the primed surface at the required thickness.
  5. Hand trowel to compact and level the surface, depending on aggregate size, shape and required finish.
  6. Apply a sealer coat of Strongcoat PU Screed neat resin to protect the porous surface.

The result

The pool surround now has a natural looking bound aggregate floor over the original tiles, with lower maintenance costs.
