The challenge

The client wanted a decorative floor with a custom design and a natural appearance for the Armani café at Hamad International Airport. The floor also had to be durable, non-slip, seamless, hard wearing and resistant to chemicals, in particular the detergents and cleaning compounds used in cafés and restaurants.

The DCP solution

DCP proposed Strongcoat Terrazzo, a solvent free, seamless decorative flooring system. A durable, pigmented epoxy resin binds a wide choice of synthetic or natural aggregates. It met the project needs for compressive and tensile strength, Shore hardness and chemical resistance. The design can be customised, and the system offers reduced maintenance and lifecycle costs.

Flooring Strongcoat UN101 Epoxy primer, levelling mortar, intermediate layer, repair-mortar, and floor screed Product page: Strongcoat UN101Specifications: Strongcoat UN101

How it was applied

  1. Prime the substrate with Strongcoat UN101.
  2. Blend the Strongcoat Terrazzo resin with the aggregates.
  3. Apply the mixed terrazzo mortar to the primed surface and compact it to the required thickness.
  4. After 24 hours curing, dry grind mechanically in slow circular passes to get a smooth, level surface and expose the aggregate.
  5. Apply a grout coat of Strongcoat Terrazzo neat resin over the whole surface to fill pinholes, pits and voids.
  6. Polish by wet grinding to take the finish from matt to gloss.

The result

The sub-contractor's package manager reported that the floor exceeded expectations, installation was seamless, the custom design combined appearance with durability, and the client praised the colours and finish. The floor performed well in a high traffic setting.
