The challenge
The Jafurah Desalination Project supplies desalinated water to the Jafurah gas field facilities. It includes a seawater desalination plant producing 80,000 m³ per day and 200 km of transmission pipelines. The project ran as a one year fast-track development. The seawater tanks needed a coating that could resist marine exposure, high humidity, high temperatures and constant contact with salt water and possible chemical contaminants. The coating had to give chemical resistance, waterproofing and long-term integrity over 63,000 m² of concrete. The tank surfaces also had blowholes, irregularities and minor defects.
The DCP solution
DCP supplied a two-part system. Quickmast 341, a high-strength, solvent-free epoxy repair paste, was used to fill blowholes and surface defects. It is thixotropic, so it suits vertical and overhead work. Strongcoat EPW, a high-build, solvent-free epoxy polysulphide coating, was used as the main protection for the seawater tanks. It is designed for exposure to seawater and aggressive chemicals, and its flexibility allows it to bridge cracks up to 1 mm. It gives a seamless, glossy surface that is easy to clean and resists abrasion.
DCP products used
How it was applied
- Fill blowholes, irregularities and minor defects in the tank surfaces with Quickmast 341 to give a smooth, sound substrate.
- Apply Strongcoat EPW to the prepared seawater tank surfaces as the protective lining.
- Work across 63,000 m² of concrete within the fast-track programme.
The result
The system met the technical requirements of the project and was applied across 63,000 m² of concrete surfaces within the fast-track construction programme.
