The challenge
The expansion of the Prophet Mosque in Al-Madina started in April 2015 and aims to raise its capacity to 1,800,000 people. In the foundation works, treatment of the pile heads was a major challenge. The pile heads had to be treated with a flowable, high-performance micro-concrete with very fast strength development and high ultimate compressive strength.
The DCP solution
The DCP Saudi technical team submitted the Cempatch FL range. It is a shrinkage compensated, free-flowing micro-concrete made from cement, dry powders and selected aggregates. Mixed with water, it is self-compacting and suits large volume concrete repairs. The range has three grades: Cempatch FL Std and Cempatch FL90 for void thicknesses of 50 to 200 mm, and Cempatch FL100 for 50 to 400 mm.

How it was applied
Pile heads were treated with the Cempatch FL range, choosing the grade by the thickness of the void: Cempatch FL Std or FL90 for 50 to 200 mm, and Cempatch FL100 for 50 to 400 mm. About 125 tons were supplied up to October 2015.
